How to convert Word to text

  1. Select or drop one or more Word documents (.docx). The preview shows the text you will get.
  2. Choose how tables are written, whether to keep list numbers and bullets, and whether to add footnotes, headers, footers and comments. Long lines can be wrapped.
  3. Click Convert to text to download the .txt file — several documents come as a ZIP.

About Word to Text

Get the plain text out of Word documents. Paragraphs stay on their own lines, numbered and bulleted lists keep their numbers, tables become tab-separated rows (ready to paste into a spreadsheet) or neatly lined-up columns, and footnotes are collected at the end.

Headers, footers and comments can be added, tracked changes are taken as accepted, long lines can be wrapped for email, and you choose the line endings and encoding. Convert several documents at once with a live preview — nothing is uploaded.

Good for

  • Pasting document text into emails, forms and CMSs
  • Feeding document text into other tools or AI
  • Archiving documents as simple text

Tip: Choose tab-separated tables, then paste the result into Excel — each cell lands in its own column.

Frequently asked questions

What does the text file contain?

All the text of the document, one paragraph per line, in reading order. List numbers and bullets are written out (1., a), •), tables become tab-separated rows or lined-up columns, and footnotes are added at the end.

Are tracked changes included?

The text is taken as if all changes were accepted: inserted text is kept and deleted text is left out.

Can I include headers, footers and comments?

Yes. Tick the options to add the headers and footers and the document’s comments with their authors.

Can I paste the text into an email or a form?

Yes — that is what plain text is for. Choose “Wrap at 72 characters” for email, or keep one line per paragraph for forms and other programs.

Does it work with .doc files?

This tool reads .docx files. Open an old .doc in Word or LibreOffice and save it as .docx first.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The conversion happens entirely in your browser — your documents never leave your device.
