About Word to RTF
Save Word documents as Rich Text Format, the format nearly every word processor and many older or specialised programs can open. Fonts, sizes, colours and highlights, bold, italic, underline and strikethrough, super- and subscript, heading styles, numbered and bulleted lists, tables with merged cells, pictures, links, footnotes, headers and footers all come across.
Choose a full RTF for Word, LibreOffice and Pages, or a simpler one for WordPad where list numbers are written as text, pick A4 or Letter, keep the document’s fonts or use one font, and leave pictures out for a small file. Convert several documents at once — nothing is uploaded.
Good for
- Sending documents to people or systems that can’t open .docx
- Importing documents into older software, CRMs and legal or medical systems
- Getting a portable, widely supported copy of a document
Tip: Leave pictures out when the RTF is for a system that only needs the text — the file will be a fraction of the size.
Frequently asked questions
What is kept in the RTF file?
Text with its fonts, sizes, colours, highlights, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, superscript and subscript; headings as heading styles; numbered and bulleted lists; tables (including merged cells); pictures; links; footnotes; headers and footers; and page breaks.
Which programs can open RTF?
Almost every word processor: Microsoft Word, WordPad, LibreOffice, Apple Pages and TextEdit, Google Docs (after upload) and many older or specialised programs that can’t read .docx.
What does “WordPad and simple editors” change?
Simple editors don’t understand real RTF lists, so in that mode list numbers and bullets are written as text with a hanging indent — they look the same, they just aren’t automatic lists any more.
Why is the RTF bigger than the .docx?
RTF stores pictures as text (hexadecimal) and isn’t compressed, so files with pictures grow a lot. Untick “Include pictures” for a small text-only file.
Does it work with .doc files?
This tool reads .docx files. Open an old .doc in Word or LibreOffice and save it as .docx first.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The conversion happens entirely in your browser — your documents never leave your device.
