About Word to Markdown
Turn Word documents into clean, readable Markdown for GitHub, documentation sites, wikis, note apps or AI tools. Headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, links, nested numbered and bulleted lists, quotes, code blocks, tables and footnotes are all converted, and pictures are saved to an images folder (or embedded) with their alt text.
Choose GitHub or CommonMark, pipe or HTML tables, # or underlined headings, ** or __ for bold, the bullet character and how line breaks are written, and add YAML front matter for static site generators. Preview the result as Markdown or formatted, convert several files at once — nothing is uploaded.
Good for
- Moving documentation from Word into GitHub, GitLab or a docs site
- Importing notes into Obsidian, Notion or a wiki
- Preparing clean text for blogs, static sites and AI tools
Tip: Use Word’s built-in Heading 1–3 styles in the document — they become #, ## and ### headings in the Markdown.
Frequently asked questions
What is kept in the Markdown?
Headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, links, numbered and bulleted lists (nested too), quotes, code blocks, tables, pictures and footnotes. Fonts, colours and page layout have no Markdown equivalent and are left out.
What happens to pictures?
By default they are saved in an images folder next to the .md file and linked with relative paths, and you download both as a ZIP. You can also embed them in the Markdown as data URLs, or leave them out. Alt text from Word is kept.
How are tables converted?
Simple tables become GitHub-style pipe tables. Tables with merged cells or lists inside cells become HTML tables, which every Markdown renderer shows correctly — or choose to always use one or the other.
GitHub or CommonMark?
GitHub Flavored Markdown adds tables, footnotes and ~~strikethrough~~ and is understood by GitHub, GitLab, Obsidian, Notion and most editors. CommonMark is the strict standard — tables and strikethrough are written as HTML there.
Can I use it for a static site or docs?
Yes. Tick “Add YAML front matter” to put the title and author at the top for Jekyll, Hugo, Docusaurus or Astro, and use the images folder option so pictures sit next to the page.
Does it work with .doc files?
This tool reads .docx files. Open an old .doc in Word or LibreOffice and save it as .docx first.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The conversion happens entirely in your browser — your documents never leave your device.
