Frequently asked questions

Which UTM parameters are required?

utm_source (where the traffic comes from, e.g. newsletter), utm_medium (the type, e.g. email) and utm_campaign (the campaign name). utm_term, utm_content and utm_id are optional.

Which channel will GA4 put my traffic in?

GA4 groups traffic by source and medium. The builder predicts the default channel — for example cpc from google becomes Paid Search, and email becomes Email. An Unassigned result means GA4 will not recognise the medium.

Should UTM values be lowercase?

Yes — GA4 is case-sensitive, so “Email” and “email” appear as two rows. Keep the lowercase option on.

Can I tag internal links?

No — UTM tags on links within your own site start a new session and overwrite the original source. Use them only on links from outside.

Are my links sent anywhere?

No. Links are built in your browser, and the ones you save are kept only in this browser.
