Frequently asked questions

How do I check if a VAT number is valid?

Type it with its country code (for example DE129273398). The format and check digit are verified instantly, then the number is looked up live in VIES, the EU’s official register, to confirm it is active.

What is the difference between valid and registered?

A valid number has the right format and check digit — it is not a typo. Registered (VIES) means the tax office confirms it is an active VAT number right now, which is what you need for zero-rated EU invoices.

Why is there no company name for some countries?

Some member states, such as Germany and Spain, do not share company names and addresses through VIES — only the active status.

Can I check many numbers at once?

Yes — paste a list, one per line. Each number is validated and checked in VIES, and you can download the results as CSV.

Which countries are supported?

All 27 EU countries (Greece uses EL), Northern Ireland (XI) and — format and check digit only — the UK, Switzerland and Norway.
