About Word Counter
Know exactly how long your text is while you write. The word counter updates as you type and shows words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, lines, unique words and syllables, plus reading, speaking and handwriting time and an estimate of pages.
It also helps you write better: readability scores show how easy your text is to read, keyword density shows the words and phrases you repeat most, long sentences are flagged, and bars show whether you fit the limits of X, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, meta descriptions and SMS. Open Word, PDF or text files — everything stays in your browser.
Good for
- Essays, assignments and applications with word limits
- Blog posts, articles and SEO meta descriptions
- Social media posts and ads with character limits
Tip: Set a word goal to see a progress bar as you write.
Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
Any run of letters or numbers counts as a word, including words with apostrophes or hyphens such as don’t and well-known. In Chinese, Japanese and Korean each character counts as one word.
How is reading time calculated?
By dividing the word count by an average silent reading speed of 238 words per minute (you can choose slow or fast). Speaking time uses 140 words per minute.
What do the readability scores mean?
Flesch reading ease runs from 0 (very hard) to 100 (very easy); 60–70 is plain English. The grade scores estimate the years of school needed to understand the text.
Does it check social media and SEO limits?
Yes — X/Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, meta titles and descriptions, SMS, Google Ads and more, with a bar that turns red when you go over.
Can I open files?
Yes — open or drop TXT, Markdown, CSV, HTML, JSON, subtitles, Word (.docx), OpenDocument (.odt), RTF and PDF files, even several at once.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Counting happens in your browser, so your text and files never leave your device. A draft is kept only in this browser so you don't lose it.
