Frequently asked questions

How does the vocal remover work?

In most studio mixes the lead vocal is in the centre of the stereo image. Subtracting the right channel from the left cancels everything in the centre; the low frequencies are kept separately so the bass and kick drum stay.

Why can I still hear some vocals?

Reverb and backing vocals are usually spread to the sides, so they remain. Songs with stereo-widened or doubled vocals, and live recordings, work less well.

Does it work on mono files?

No — a mono file has no stereo difference to use, so it needs a stereo song.

Can I change the key for singing?

Yes — in the Edit tab change Pitch in semitones and Speed without changing pitch.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The vocals are removed in your browser, so your audio never leaves your device. Some formats use FFmpeg (WebAssembly), which downloads once — about 32 MB — and is then cached.
