How to remove duplicates in Excel
- Select or drop an Excel, ODS or CSV file and pick the sheet with the tabs.
- Tick the columns that decide whether rows are the same (for example just Email), choose what to keep and whether to ignore case and extra spaces. Rows struck through in red will be removed.
- Click Remove duplicates to download the cleaned file — with the removed rows on a sheet of their own if you like.
About Remove Excel Duplicates
Clean duplicate rows out of a spreadsheet. Choose the columns that decide what counts as a duplicate — every column for identical rows, or just an email address or ID to catch repeated entries — and ignore differences in case and extra spaces.
Keep the first or last copy, keep only rows that occur once, extract just the duplicates, or keep everything and mark duplicates in a new column. The preview shows exactly which rows go, the removed rows can be saved on their own sheet, and nothing is uploaded.
Good for
- Cleaning mailing and contact lists before a campaign
- Removing repeated orders or transactions from exports
- Finding duplicate IDs in a dataset
Tip: To dedupe contacts, compare only the Email column — names are often spelled differently.
Frequently asked questions
How are duplicates found?
Rows count as duplicates when the columns you tick have the same values. Tick all columns for rows that are identical, or just one — like Email or Customer ID — to find repeated entries even when other columns differ.
Which copy is kept?
You choose: the first or the last copy of each set, only the rows that occur once (removing every copy of a duplicate), or only the duplicates.
Can I mark duplicates instead of deleting them?
Yes. Choose “Everything — add a Duplicate column” and every row is kept, with a column saying First or Duplicate.
Does it ignore differences in case and spaces?
Yes, by default — “ASHA@ACME.COM ” and “asha@acme.com” count as the same. Untick the options for exact matches.
Can I see what will be removed first?
Yes. The preview strikes through the rows that will be removed in red and shows the copies that stay in green, and the summary counts them.
Is anything else in the workbook changed?
No. The other sheets are kept as they are, values keep their formats, and the removed rows can be saved on a separate sheet so nothing is lost.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser — your data never leaves your device.
