How to convert a PDF to Markdown
- Select or drop a PDF. It is converted straight away and shown as a formatted preview.
- Choose what to keep — headings, bold and italic, links, tables, pictures — and whether to leave out headers, footers and page numbers or mark page breaks. Switch to Markdown to see or edit the source.
- Download the .md file (or a ZIP with the pictures in an images folder), or copy the Markdown.
About PDF to Markdown
Convert a PDF into clean, structured Markdown — ready for GitHub, documentation sites, Obsidian, Notion or an AI prompt. Headings come from the font sizes, paragraphs are joined across line breaks and hyphenation, and bold, italic, inline code and links are kept.
Bullet and numbered lists keep their nesting, fixed-width text becomes code blocks, ruled tables become Markdown tables, and pictures are saved alongside in a ZIP. Headers, footers and page numbers are left out, two-column pages are read in the right order, and you can preview and edit everything before saving. Nothing is uploaded.
Good for
- Moving documentation and manuals into a wiki or Git repository
- Taking notes from papers into Obsidian or Notion
- Preparing PDF content for AI tools and chatbots
Tip: Convert a range of pages (for example 5-12) to pull just one chapter into your notes.
Frequently asked questions
What does the Markdown include?
Headings (from the larger font sizes), paragraphs joined across line breaks, bold, italic and inline code, links, bullet and numbered lists with their nesting, code blocks for text in a fixed-width font, tables as GitHub-style Markdown tables, and pictures as image links.
How are pictures handled?
Each picture is saved as a PNG or JPG file in an images folder and linked from the Markdown, and you download both together as a ZIP. Untick Pictures for a single .md file.
Are headers, footers and page numbers removed?
Yes, by default. Lines repeated at the top or bottom of the pages, like a document title or page numbers, are left out so they don’t interrupt the text. You can also mark page breaks with an HTML comment.
Does it work with tables?
Tables with ruled lines are recognised cell by cell and written as Markdown tables, which GitHub, GitLab, Obsidian, Notion and most editors display.
Can I edit the Markdown before saving?
Yes. Switch to the Markdown tab to see and change the source; the preview updates when you switch back, and the edited version is what you download or copy.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
A scanned PDF has no text to convert. Run it through OCR PDF first to make the text readable, then convert the result here.
Does my PDF leave my device?
No. The conversion happens in your browser, so the file is never uploaded.
