How to translate a PDF

  1. Select or drop a PDF. Its first page appears on the left.
  2. Choose the language to translate To (the original language is detected) and how to translate: privately in your browser where it is supported, or with Google Translate. Limit it to some Pages if you like.
  3. Click Translate. Compare the pages side by side, download the translated PDF, or get the translation as text — alone or next to the original.

About Translate PDF

Translate a PDF and get a PDF back that looks like the original. The text is read in blocks — paragraphs, headings, table cells — with their size, weight and colour, translated, and set back in the same places. Pictures, lines, tables and backgrounds stay exactly as they were.

Translate into more than 40 languages, including Indian languages, Arabic, Chinese and Japanese. Where your browser has a built-in translator, the whole job stays on your device; otherwise only the text goes to Google Translate through our server. Compare pages side by side, translate only some pages, and download the translation as text too.

Good for

  • Reading reports, manuals and letters in another language
  • Sharing a translated copy of a brochure or form
  • Studying from papers written in another language

Tip: Translating only the pages you need (for example 1-5) is quicker for long documents.

Frequently asked questions

Does the translated PDF keep the layout?

Yes. Each paragraph, heading and table cell is translated and set back in the same place, in the same size, weight and colour, and shrunk a little where the translation is longer. Pictures, lines, tables and backgrounds are not touched, because only the text is replaced.

Which languages can I translate to?

More than 40, including English, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Urdu, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Arabic, Russian, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. The original language is detected automatically, or you can choose it.

Is my document private?

Your PDF file never leaves your device. With “Your browser (on-device)” — available in recent Chrome — the translation happens on your computer too. With Google Translate only the text is sent, through our server, to Google to be translated.

Is the translated text still selectable?

For languages written in Latin, Cyrillic or Greek letters, yes — the translation is real text you can search and copy. Scripts that standard PDF fonts can’t display correctly, such as Hindi, Arabic or Chinese, are drawn by your browser so they look right.

Can I translate a scanned PDF?

A scanned page is a picture without text. Run it through OCR PDF first to recognise the text, then translate the result here.

Can I get the translation as text?

Yes. After translating you can download the translation as a text file, or a side-by-side version with each original passage followed by its translation.

How accurate is the translation?

It is machine translation — very good for understanding a document, but for contracts, medical or legal documents have the result checked by a native speaker.
