How to repair a PDF
- Select or drop one or more damaged PDFs. Each is checked straight away and the problems found are listed — a broken index, a cut-off end, damaged pages or junk in the file.
- Leave the method on Automatic (or choose to only rebuild the structure, or to rescue pages as images) and type the password if the PDF has one.
- Click Repair PDF, check the recovered pages and download the repaired file (several files come as a ZIP).
About Repair PDF
Repair a PDF that won’t open, shows an error, or has missing or blank pages. Each file is checked first and the problems are listed in plain words — a broken index, a file cut off during download, damaged pages or junk in front of the PDF — and files that aren’t really PDFs are recognised.
Repair tries three methods and keeps the one that recovers the most pages: rebuilding the file structure (everything kept: text, links, forms, bookmarks), re-saving it page by page, and rescuing every page that can still be shown as an image with searchable text. Password-protected files and batches are supported, and nothing is uploaded.
Good for
- PDFs that show “file is damaged and could not be repaired”
- Downloads and email attachments that were cut off
- Files that open with blank or missing pages
Tip: Keep the original file: if a newer copy turns up or the download can be repeated, that will always beat a repaired one.
Frequently asked questions
What kinds of damage can be repaired?
A broken cross-reference table (the index that tells apps where everything is), a file that was cut off while downloading or copying, junk added in front of the PDF, damaged objects and content streams, and a damaged list of pages. Every repair method is tried and the one that recovers the most pages is kept.
How does the repair work?
First the file structure is rebuilt by scanning the whole file for every object, so text, links, forms and bookmarks are kept. If pages are still missing, the PDF is re-saved page by page, leaving out what can’t be read. As a last resort every page that can still be shown is rescued as an image, with its text kept searchable.
Can every PDF be repaired?
Not always. If the part of the file that holds a page is missing (for example when a download stopped halfway), that page can’t be brought back — the repaired file shows how many pages were recovered. Files that aren’t PDFs at all, such as a Word file or an error page saved with a .pdf name, are detected and named.
Will the repaired PDF look the same?
With “Rebuild structure” it is the same PDF, rewritten cleanly — text stays selectable and links, forms and bookmarks are kept. Rescued pages look the same but are images, with invisible text so you can still search them.
My PDF has a password. Can I repair it?
Yes — type the password in the panel. It is only used in your browser to open the file.
Can I repair several PDFs at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like; each is checked and repaired separately and you can download them together as a ZIP.
Are damaged files uploaded for repair?
No. Checking and repairing happen in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.
