How to merge Word documents

  1. Select or drop two or more Word documents (.docx) and put them in order with the ↑ ↓ buttons.
  2. Choose whether each document starts on a new page, whether to keep each one’s formatting, headers and page size, and whether to add the file names as headings.
  3. Check the merged document in the preview, then click Merge to download it as one .docx file.

About Merge Word

Put several Word documents together into one. Unlike tools that convert to plain text and back, the documents are combined as real Word content — styles, tables, numbered lists, pictures, charts, links, footnotes, headers and footers all come across, and clashing styles are kept apart so every document looks as it did.

Each document becomes its own section, starting on a new page, continuously or on a right-hand page, with its own page size and orientation — or use the first document’s styles, headers and page setup for all. File names can be added as headings, and the preview shows the merged document before you download it. Nothing is uploaded.

Good for

  • Assembling chapters into a book or thesis
  • Combining reports from several authors
  • Joining a cover letter, CV and references into one file

Tip: Put the document whose styles you like best first — it’s the base for the merged file.

Frequently asked questions

Does each document keep its formatting?

Yes. The documents are combined as real Word content, not converted: fonts, styles, tables, lists, pictures, charts, links, footnotes, headers and footers all come across. Where two documents define a style differently, both versions are kept so neither changes.

Can I make everything look like the first document?

Yes. Choose “Use the first document’s styles” — headings and body text then follow the first document’s style definitions, and you can also use its headers, footers, page size and margins for all.

Does each document start on a new page?

By default, yes — each one becomes its own section starting on a new page. You can also run them on continuously or start each on a right-hand page for printing.

Are page orientation and headers kept?

Yes. Each document keeps its own page size, orientation, margins, headers and footers, so a landscape appendix stays landscape.

Will numbered lists restart correctly?

Yes. Each document’s lists are kept separate, so numbering continues within a document and doesn’t run on from the previous one.

Can I add a table of contents?

Tick “Add each file name as a heading”, then in Word use References → Table of Contents to list them.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Merging happens entirely in your browser — your documents never leave your device.
