About Split Word
Turn one long Word document into several. Split at each chapter heading, at every page, at section breaks or at a marker text you choose, then make a file per part, combine every N parts, or pick ranges such as 1-3, 4, 7-. The preview lists the parts with their titles and word counts and shows any of them.
Each part is a real Word document made from the original, with the same styles, numbering, headers, footers and page setup — not a re-typed copy. Pictures go with the part that uses them, and files can be named after their headings. Nothing is uploaded.
Good for
- Splitting a book or thesis into chapters
- Sending each section of a report to a different reviewer
- Breaking a mail-merge result into one letter per file
Tip: For a mail-merge document, split at each page or section — every letter becomes its own file.
Frequently asked questions
Does each part keep the formatting?
Yes. Every part is a real Word document made from the original: the same styles, fonts, numbering, headers, footers, margins and page orientation. Only the content outside the part is left out.
How do I split a document into chapters?
Choose “Each heading” and the heading level — Heading 1 gives one file per chapter, Heading 1 and 2 also splits at sections. Files are named after their headings.
How does splitting by page work?
Word saves where each page started the last time it laid out the document, and the tool uses those positions plus manual page breaks. A paragraph that runs over two pages stays with the page where it starts.
Can I choose which pages or chapters go into each file?
Yes. Choose “Files from ranges” and type ranges such as 1-3, 4, 7- — each range becomes one file. Or put every N parts into one file.
Can I split at my own markers?
Yes. Type the text that marks a split, such as --- or [split]; a new file starts at every paragraph containing it, and the marker lines can be left out.
Are pictures kept?
Pictures, charts and tables stay in the part they belong to, and pictures a part doesn’t use are left out so the files stay small.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Splitting happens entirely in your browser — your document never leaves your device.
