Frequently asked questions
How do I know if an IBAN is valid?
Type or paste it: the country, length and format are checked, then the two check digits are verified with the ISO 7064 mod 97 rule, which catches almost every typo. For Belgium, France, Spain and Norway the account’s own check digits are verified too.
Does a valid IBAN mean the account exists?
No — it means the IBAN is correctly formed. To be sure the account exists and belongs to the right person, confirm with the recipient or make a small test payment; banks in the EU also show a “verification of payee” name check.
Can I check a list of IBANs?
Yes. Paste a list or open a CSV or Excel file — every IBAN in it is found and checked, and you can download the results as CSV.
How long is an IBAN?
Between 15 characters (Norway) and 32 (Saint Lucia): 22 in Germany and the UK, 27 in France and Italy, 18 in the Netherlands, 24 in Spain, 23 in the UAE and 24 in Saudi Arabia. The table on this page lists them all.
Are the IBANs I check sent anywhere?
No. Every check runs in your browser, so the account numbers you enter never leave your device.
