Frequently asked questions

How do I write a cover letter?

Enter the job and company, pick an example that fits you — graduate, career change, IT, sales, teaching or general — and answer four short questions. The letter is filled in for you; then edit it to sound like you.

How long should a cover letter be?

Usually 250 to 400 words on one page: an opening with the job you want, one or two paragraphs with your most relevant results, and a short closing. The word counter tells you when you are in range.

Can it match my resume?

Yes. If you made a resume in our Resume / CV Builder, choose it under “Match a resume”: your details, header, colours and fonts are reused so the two documents look like a set.

Can I send it by email instead of PDF?

Click Copy text to copy the letter as plain text for an email or a job portal’s cover letter box.

Is it private?

Yes. The letter is written and turned into a PDF in your browser and saved only on this device.
