About UPSC Photo Size

UPSC application forms ask for a square colour photo on a white background with the face covering about three quarters of it, between 350 × 350 and 1000 × 1000 pixels and 20–300 KB. Add your photo and the tool frames, cleans and saves it to match.

It works for Civil Services, ESE, CDS, NDA, CAPF and other UPSC exams. The signature is a separate upload — use Resize Signature. Nothing leaves your browser.

Good for

  • UPSC CSE, ESE, CDS, NDA and CAPF applications
  • One-time registration (OTR) on the UPSC site
  • Other forms that want a square white-background photo

Tip: Use the same recent photo across the application and your admit card — UPSC compares them.

Frequently asked questions

What photo does UPSC ask for?

A recent colour photo on a white background, square between 350 × 350 and 1000 × 1000 pixels, JPG of 20 KB to 300 KB, with the face covering about three quarters of the photo. Check the current notice for your exam.

Can I change the pixel size?

Yes — it is 550 × 550 by default; choose another resolution or a custom size in pixels if the notice asks for it.

How is my face positioned?

The face is found automatically and the photo is framed so your head (chin to crown) has the size the rules ask for, with the right space above it. Drag the photo or use the zoom slider to fine-tune — the guide lines show where the crown and chin should be.

Can I change the background?

Yes. The person is separated from the background in your browser, and the background is replaced with white, off-white, light grey, blue, red or any colour. Choose “Keep the photo’s own” if your wall is already plain.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Face detection, background replacement and everything else run in your browser — your photo never leaves your device.

What if my photo is rejected?

Make sure the photo is recent, your face is clear and evenly lit, and nothing covers it. Retake it against a plain wall if the edges around your hair look rough.
