Frequently asked questions
How do I convert MP4 to GIF?
Open the video, drag the trim handles (or type the start and end), pick a frame rate and width, then click Create GIF and download. You can also crop, add text and edit single frames before you create it.
Why is my GIF bigger than the MP4?
GIF is a 1980s format with only 256 colours and simple compression, so it is usually 5–20 times larger than the same clip as MP4. Keep it short, small and at 10–15 fps — or use the Fit under option.
How do I make the GIF smaller?
Use a smaller width (320–480 px is plenty for chats), a lower frame rate (10–12 fps), fewer colours (64–128) and some lossy compression — or type a size under “Fit under a file size” and the settings are found for you. Shorter clips make the biggest difference.
Can I add text or a caption?
Yes — open the Text tab: meme text (top and bottom), any number of captions with font, size, colour, outline and shadow, dragged into place on the preview and shown on all frames or only some.
Can I save as MP4, WebM, WebP or APNG instead?
Yes. The Export tab makes GIF, MP4 (H.264), WebM, animated WebP and APNG from the same edit — MP4 and WebP are usually many times smaller than a GIF.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Frames are read from the video by your browser and the GIF is encoded on your device, so even private clips stay private. Formats the browser cannot play are converted with FFmpeg running in the page.
