Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will my GIF get?

Usually 30–80%. Lossy 30–60 with 128 colours barely shows; resizing to a smaller width and dropping every 2nd frame cut the size most.

Can I compress a GIF to a specific size?

Yes. Type the size in KB or tap a preset (2 MB for Discord, 8 MB, 15 MB for Slack); the compressor tries stronger settings, then a smaller size, until it fits.

Will it ruin the quality?

Lossy compression changes pixels only where the difference is hard to see, and the palette is rebuilt from your GIF’s own colours. Try a value, check the preview and adjust.

What does “Optimise unchanged areas” do?

Pixels that do not change from the previous frame are stored as transparent and each frame is cropped to the area that changed — the same technique as gifsicle -O3.

Can I save as MP4, WebM, WebP or APNG instead?

Yes. The Export tab makes GIF, MP4 (H.264), WebM, animated WebP and APNG from the same edit — MP4 and WebP are usually many times smaller than a GIF.

Is my GIF uploaded?

No. The GIF is compressed in your browser and never leaves your device.
