About the Internet Speed Test
This Internet Speed Test measures how fast your connection really is, right in your browser. It reports your download and upload speed in megabits per second (Mbps), along with your ping (latency) and jitter — the two numbers that decide how smooth video calls, streaming and gaming feel.
A live speedometer needle sweeps in real time as data transfers, so you can watch your connection climb to its top speed instead of just waiting for a final number. The test also detects your network provider (ISP), your approximate location, the nearest test server and your connection type.
Everything runs client-side using Cloudflare's public speed endpoints — there's no app to install and no sign-up. Your results are not stored or sent to us, and no personal data or Wi-Fi details are ever requested.
How to test your internet speed
- Close downloads and streaming on your network.
- Click Start test and wait about 20 seconds.
- Read download, upload, ping and jitter — and what your line can handle.
Frequently asked questions
How is the speed measured?
Your browser downloads and uploads test data from the nearest Cloudflare data centre over several parallel connections, growing the size until each measurement is reliable. The result is the 90th percentile, similar to Cloudflare’s own test.
What is a good internet speed?
25 Mbps handles 4K streaming for one person; 50–100 Mbps suits a household; video calls need about 3–4 Mbps up and down. For gaming, ping and jitter matter more than speed — below 50 ms ping and 20 ms jitter is good.
What is “ping under load”?
Ping measured while the download runs. If it is much higher than the normal ping, your router buffers too much (bufferbloat), causing lag in games and calls when someone downloads. Enabling SQM / QoS on the router fixes it.
Why is my result lower than my plan?
Wi-Fi, other devices using the line, VPNs and the time of day all lower speeds. For the true line speed, test on a cable connection with nothing else running.
How much data does a test use?
About 25–60 MB for a normal test and up to around 250 MB for a thorough one.
