Character Counter

Count characters with and without spaces as you type — letters, digits, emoji, bytes, characters per line, SMS parts and the limits of X, Instagram, Google and more.

How to count characters

  1. Type or paste your text, or open a file.
  2. See the character counts update instantly; set your own limit to see how many characters are left.
  3. Check each line, the platform limits and SMS parts — download the text trimmed to your limit if it is too long.

About Character Counter

See exactly how many characters your text has while you type — with and without spaces, broken down into letters, digits, spaces, punctuation and emoji, plus the size in bytes.

Set a limit to see how many characters are left (and download the text trimmed to fit), check the length of every line, see how many SMS messages it takes, and compare it with the limits of X, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Google titles and meta descriptions, and ads. Your text never leaves your browser.

Good for

  • Tweets, captions, ads and meta descriptions
  • SMS and push notifications
  • Form fields, product titles and subtitles with length limits

Tip: Use the Per line tab to check subtitle or product-title lengths in one go.

Frequently asked questions

Are spaces counted?

The main count includes spaces, line breaks and punctuation. The “Without spaces” count leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks — and you can choose which one your limit uses.

How are emoji counted?

As one character each, the way you see them, even when an emoji is made of several Unicode parts (like 👨‍👩‍👧). Untick the option to count Unicode code points instead.

How many characters fit in an SMS?

160 in standard GSM encoding (153 per part when split), or 70 (67 per part) as soon as the text contains an emoji or special letters. The tool shows how many messages your text needs.

Can I count each line separately?

Yes — the Per line tab shows the length of every line, which is handy for subtitles, product titles and CSV columns.

Can I open files?

Yes — open or drop TXT, Markdown, CSV, HTML, JSON, subtitles, Word (.docx), OpenDocument (.odt), RTF and PDF files, even several at once.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Counting happens in your browser, so your text and files never leave your device. A draft is kept only in this browser so you don't lose it.
