About Change Aspect Ratio
Turn a picture into the shape you need — square for profile pictures, 4:5 for Instagram, 16:9 for videos and slides, 9:16 for stories. Crop to the new ratio with smart crop keeping the subject in frame, or pick which part to keep.
Or keep the whole picture and add space around it, filled with a blurred copy of the picture, any colour or transparency. Works on many pictures at once, all in your browser.
Good for
- Making square profile pictures
- Turning landscape photos into 9:16 stories without cutting them
- Getting 16:9 images for slides and video thumbnails
Tip: “Fit inside” with the blurred background keeps everything in the picture and looks natural.
Frequently asked questions
What is an aspect ratio?
The shape of a picture: width compared with height. 1:1 is square, 16:9 is widescreen, 9:16 is a tall phone screen and 4:5 is Instagram’s portrait post.
Crop or add a background?
Cropping keeps the full frame filled but cuts some of the picture; smart crop keeps the subject. Adding a background keeps the whole picture and fills the extra space with a blurred copy, a colour or transparency.
Does the resolution change?
When cropping, the picture keeps as many pixels as fit in the new shape; when adding a background, the canvas grows. Nothing is stretched.
Can I use my own ratio?
Yes. Choose Custom and enter any two numbers, such as 5 and 4.
Is my picture uploaded?
No. The ratio is changed in your browser, so the picture stays on your device.
Which ratio should I use for social media?
Common choices are 1:1 or 4:5 for Instagram feed posts, 9:16 for stories, reels and TikTok, and 16:9 for YouTube thumbnails and banners.
