How to Reduce an Image to 100 KB (or Any KB Limit)
Exam, visa and job application portals frequently reject photos and signatures over a strict size such as 20 KB, 50 KB or 100 KB.
MyRoutineTool has ready-made pages for common limits, and the Image Compressor can target any size you type.
A 100 KB limit is most common on job portals, college admissions and visa or passport applications.
Step by step
- Open Compress Image to 100 KB (or the page for your limit — 20 KB, 50 KB, 200 KB and more are available).
- Select your JPG or PNG image. It is compressed to fit the limit automatically.
- Download the result and check the size before uploading.
If the portal also asks for exact dimensions
- Resize first with Image Resizer (e.g. 200 × 230 pixels), then compress — a smaller image reaches a KB target with far better quality.
- For a custom limit, use Image Compressor → Target size and type the KB value.
- Save as JPG unless the portal says otherwise; it is the most widely accepted format.
How the 100 KB target is reached
The tool tries qualities from high to low and keeps the best one that fits. If even a low quality is too big, it makes the picture slightly smaller so it still looks sharp.
Will the portal accept it?
Every file is made 100 KB or a little less, counting 1 KB as 1000 bytes — so it is also under the limit on websites that count 1 KB as 1024 bytes.
Frequently asked questions
Will the photo look blurry at 100 KB?
For a typical passport or profile photo, 100 KB is plenty and stays sharp. Very small targets (10–20 KB) need more compression, so resize the image down first.
What if I need a different limit?
There are pages for 10, 20, 50, 150, 200, 300 and 500 KB and 1 or 2 MB, or set any size in the Image Compressor.
