How to Make a Passport Size Photo at Home
You don’t need a studio for a digital passport or ID photo. A phone photo against a plain wall, cropped to the right size, is accepted by many online applications.
Always check the official requirements of the country or office you’re applying to — sizes and rules differ.
In most countries — including India, the UK, the EU and Australia — passport size means 35 × 45 mm (3.5 × 4.5 cm); in the US it is 2 × 2 inches.
Step by step
- Take a well-lit photo facing the camera, against a plain light background, with a neutral expression.
- Open Passport Size Photo and select the photo. It is resized and cropped to the standard passport size.
- Adjust the crop so your head is centred, then download.
- If the form has a file-size limit, bring it down with Compress Image to the required KB.
Photo checklist
- Even lighting with no shadows on the face or background.
- Eyes open and visible; no sunglasses; glasses only if the rules allow them.
- Plain white or light background — use Background Remover if yours is busy.
- Other sizes such as 2×2 inch, 35×45 mm and visa photos have their own tools.
How your face is positioned
The face is found automatically, and the photo is framed so your head — chin to crown — has the size the rules ask for, with the right space above it. Drag the photo or use the zoom slider to fine-tune; guide lines show where the crown and chin should be.
Changing the background
The person is separated from the background in your browser, and the background is replaced with white, off-white, light grey, blue, red or any colour you choose.
Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Resizing and cropping happen in your browser, so your photo never leaves your device.
Can I print several copies on one sheet?
Yes. Download a print sheet with several copies and print it at home or at a photo shop.
