Base64 Encode / Decode

Turn text, images or files into Base64 — or get the original back from a Base64 string.

How to encode or decode Base64

  1. Type text, paste Base64 or open a file.
  2. Choose Encode or Decode, the character set and the format.
  3. Copy the result or download the decoded file.

About Base64 Encode/Decode

Encode text or any file to Base64 and decode Base64 back to text or the original file.

Everything works in your browser, so it is instant and private, and your settings are remembered on this device.

Good for

  • Embedding images in HTML, CSS and emails
  • Reading Base64 in APIs, JWTs and configs
  • Basic-auth headers and Kubernetes secrets

Tip: Base64 is encoding, not encryption — anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide passwords.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert an image to Base64?

Yes — open the image and you get plain Base64, a data URI, a CSS background or an HTML img tag ready to paste.

How do I turn Base64 back into a file?

Switch to Decode and paste the Base64 (with or without the data: prefix). The file type is detected — images, PDF, ZIP, audio, video, fonts — with a preview, and Download saves it with the right extension.

What is URL-safe Base64?

A variant that uses - and _ instead of + and /, and often no = padding, so it can be used in URLs and file names. JWTs use it. Decoding accepts both forms automatically.

Why does my decoded text look wrong?

The text was probably encoded with another character set. Try UTF-16LE (common for Windows and PowerShell) or Latin-1.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Everything is processed by JavaScript in your browser — nothing you paste or open is sent to a server, so it is safe for API responses, tokens, configs and customer data. It also works offline once the page has loaded.
